Friday open thread: hobbies
2026-05-22 05:32 pmFor today's open thread, I had the idea to do a modification of something we sometimes ask at work as a job interview activity (although obviously without that added pressure!): talk about one of your interests or hobbies, and why you like it. (If you want to make it really challenging, do it with the constraints we use in the job interviews: explain what it is as if to people who have never heard of this hobby/activity before, treat it like an elevator pitch where you have to 'sell' the benefits of this hobby, and do so with an extremely limited wordcount.)
Since I think it goes without saying that almost everyone here will recognise the value of a) social blogging, b) writing original fiction, fanfiction or both, and c) engaging fannishly with works of media, maybe pick a different hobby or interest?
( Picking things up, putting them down, and dancing to very cheesy music )
So, talk to me about your (non-fandom, non-writing, non-Dreamwidth) hobbies!
History of Middle Earth book deal — and an odd question
2026-05-22 10:24 amFor those of you who are Tolkien fans and ebook readers: The Kindle ebook of Sauron Defeated (History of Middle Earth, Book 9) is currenty on sale for $1.99.
Which leads me to the odd question: I checked to see if any of the other volumes of History of Middle Earth were currently on sale, and saw that Morgoth's Ring (Book 10) isn't currently available as a Kindle book in the US, which is just strange. If it was the last book in the series, I could see it — maybe they hadn't gotten around to formatting that one for Kindle yet — but 11 and 12 are available. It's just strange and random.
ETA: In case you were wondering about other volumes possibly being on sale: The Return of the Shadow (Book 6) is currently $5.99, everything else is full price.
ETA2: Apparently Morgoth's Ring is available on Kindle in the US, but the link from the History of Middle Earth series page takes you to a page for Morgoth's Ring that erroneously shows it as not being available. If you want it, you have to search for it manually rather than going to it from the series page. How dumb.
Happy Friday!
2026-05-22 10:04 amHappy Friday, to those of you who celebrate!
Yesterday was a L.'s 22nd birthday. We had a good celebration for her. She picked White Castle as her birthday dinner and a rewatch of the The Super Mario Brothers Movie as her birthday movie. She wanted a copy of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and I was able to find a copy at a local Gamestop for her, and she was thrilled with that. When we went to pick out her birthday cake, she found several other foods that she wanted, so we got those as well, which was really good — it's always been hard to find foods that she wants to eat, so it's hard to keep her weight in a healthy range, so it's always good to when she finds new foods that appeal to her.
But of course because yesterday was L.'s birthday, I had the worst mental health day I've had in quite a while. My depression has been gradually getting worse (it could just be my brain, could be the new antiseizure medicine, could be a combo of the two), but yesterday it really smacked me down. After a little while I was able to perk up some and put on a brave front for the rest of the day, but it's bad enough that I'm going to talk to my doctor about going back on antidepressants. Today is less bad, so at least that's something.
Anyway, hope you're all doing well. Take care.

2026 OTW Election Timeline & Membership Deadline
2026-05-21 05:17 pm
The OTW Elections committee is pleased to announce that the timeline for the 2026 election for new members of the Board of Directors has been posted!
As previously announced, Erica Frank and Kathryn Soderholm stepped down from their positions on the Board. Anh Pham and Qiao Chu are also stepping down from the Board as they have reached the end of their terms. There are seven Directors on the OTW's Board and this year OTW members will elect four new Directors - three Directors to serve a full-term (3 years) and one Director to serve a partial term (1 year).
This year's election will be held August 14-17. This means that the deadline for volunteers to declare their candidacy is June 19.
As usual, the election membership deadline is June 30. If you're interested in voting, please make sure your membership is active as of that date. If you are unsure whether your donation was made before the deadline, please contact our Development and Membership committee by using the contact form on our website and selecting "Is my membership current/Am I eligible to vote?".
You can find out how to become a member on the Elections website, or if you're familiar with the process, you can donate here!
If you want to know more about the election process in general, you can check out the Elections Policies.
We're looking forward to an active election season with ample communication between candidates and voters, and we hope you'll be a part of it. Don't forget to follow the Elections committee on Bluesky and Tumblr to keep up to date with the latest news!
If you have any questions or comments, don't hesitate to contact Elections.

2026-05-20 08:56 pmBoth being over on very different notes is rough.
Even a week ago I was like 'watching two games at once? couldn't be me' But I did stream a win and a loss tonight.
Firebirds had a very good run. Tonight's game was close.
No more Melanson content until next season. And also the Kraken are taking a serious scoop out of the Firebirds when they make their next roster. The team will look very different next season.
How am I supposed to process the PWHL season having the most dramatic, romantic outcome possible and also my Firebirds falling on the same night?

Marie-Philip Poulin drinking Molson's out of the Walter Cup as it's won by a Canadian team for the first time. Hang it in the Louvre.
So glad she and her wife won. At 35 her career is not over, but with a 4 team expansion draft about to hit this year was almost certainly her best chance. She finally has a stable league to play in, and the wife line made damn sure she'd hoist that cup, and then get covered in beer.

A major milestone for L.
2026-05-20 11:11 amThere are so many milestones that mark the various social and legal phases of transition from childhood to adulthood. L. has just hit another one — possibly the final one, although I'm sure another one will pop up to hit us right in the feels when we least expect it.
Tomorrow is L.'s 22nd birthday, which marks the point that her pediatrician will no longer see her. So yesterday was L.'s final visit with her pediatrician. She got her yearly physical, got a recommendation for a new PCP, and got to say good-bye to the doctor who's seen her grow up. It was a surprisingly emotional event.
